One - Two - Four

Wouldn't you think that a teller, or anyone who works at a bank for that matter, should be able to count?

I noticed a suspicious charge on one of my accounts this morning when I was doing some banking stuff. So I called the bank and asked what it was.

Seems they deducted $21 from my account for a "wrong" deposit.

To give you alittle insite into ME. I am so very anal about my check register, deposits, statements. Anything that has to do with numbers and money, I double - triple - sometimes yes I even quadriple check the addition. Okay, it is a sickness and I should probably get help but . . .

Now that you know that...

Please go to the extended

The "girl" (she sounded about 12 maybe that is why she couldn't count) at the bank looked up the deposit. I asked her to "list" the checks on the deposit in question. There were 17. (I get alot of check from work) She said she would go ahead and total them again. As she is doing the total she is telling me the amounts of each check. Of course, I am totaling right along with her. Pretty soon the total is MORE than the original deposit. And she says there were two .50cent checks? What the F*CK? Fifty cent checks? I didn't have any 50 cent checks.

I am getting a bit irratated now. So I have her read me the totals that the original teller put on her deposits at the end of the day. The total was $21 MORE than my original deposit.

Then why did they DEDUCT $21 from my account?

Here's what I figure.

The deposit into my account was made for the correct amount on MY deposit slip ($489.50).

The original teller added it up at the end of the night and she must have added one of the $21 checks in the deposit twice. So her deposit was $21 higher ($510.50) than the one that I received in my account.

The bank then caught her mistake and said "Hey, she was $21 off so we must take that $21 from the deposit. So $21 wa removed from my account.

Make sense.

Well it would if I had received the $510.50 deposit. But I only got the correct $489.50 put into my account.

So they are looking into it. Hopefully, there is someone there who can count.

I just want my $21 dollars back.

Seems like a teller SHOULD be able to count..even at age 12. I hate when stuff like that happens!

Computers have made us all lazy.

I'll agree with Tom - no one bothers to check math anymore . the computers are supposed to do it for you.
When I would take my father-in-law to the bank (in his 80's) - he would get out a pencil and be totalling right along with the teller ... more than once I witnessed him catching a mistake. In his generation, you added in your head as fast as some calculators can today!

I hate when someone else messed up but wants to hold you accountable for it.
